09 Erndalar 1210
The next morning (the 7th of Erndalar) we set off many fewer in number. While we followed the “Stone Road” to Starkwkall, Sulius and Clio returned to the Temple to begin preparations for the transfer of the water. Drathon and Plynsen accompanied them, should they need protection from …??well, I’m not clear on what they might need protection from, actually. Perhaps Firena is being a tad overcautious on this one? Oh, and naturally, we no longer had use for a guide to the Crystal Springs, so he returned with the others. Thus it was that the contingent of Tar’s Company who approached Starkwall Castle this morning included Sir Yalinari, Lieutenant Firena, Sergeants Hanar and Nyra, Shasivin, Edmund, Vanith, and myself. Castle Starkwall is basically no more than a small keep with an attached cluster of buildings that contain support buildings: a tavern (the Wasted Wyvern), a bowyer’s, a blacksmith, that sort of thing. Although we were initially refused entry by a Sir Nat, on very impressively demanding his rights as a Knight of Greyhawk, Baron Cauggan, the resident nobleman, eventually granted us leave to enter. Our initial feelings were that that may not have been a completely good thing, as we definitely don’t feel welcome here. We had no idea how correct we would turn out to be.
After a dull afternoon in our apartments in the castle, the Company members, with the exception of the Lieutenant and Sergeant Nyra, who went out for a quiet walk, headed for the Wyvern in search of some distraction. The pair had intended to join us some time later, but when three hours later, they had still not appeared, we set off to find them, led, surprisingly, by Sir Yalinari, who in the absense of all the remaining Company leadership, actually took command. They had not returned to our apartments, so we took to the streets, only to find signs of a struggle a little distance outside town. Judging by the signs, at least one individual had been badly injured. Following this trail led to an encampment, where we were certain our missing comrades were being held against their will. After creeping to within spell distance of the camp, I cast a spell to confiscate contraband materials. The results were amazing, though specific: a large number of weapons heaped themselves at my feet. Thus disarmed, the bandits quickly surrendered. We bound them, and rescued our compatriots, discovering as we did so that although Sergeant Nyra had escaped injury, the Lieutenant had been cruelly cut across the legs, by a pike, as we found out later.
Due to her injuries, it was urgent that we return her to the castle immediately, where she could be seen by a combat healer. We did so, and as I write this, she is resting comfortably, healed to the best of the Starkwall Castle surgeon. I will visit her in the morning to ascertain her complete condition. I will also, if necessary, record the results of the interrogation Sir Yalinari was forced to undergo upon our return to the castle, but for now, I need to sleep. It has long since passed midnight, and I am in desperate need of sleep.
