16 September (The day of the Opening)

At 7 bells Sir Tar, Sir Yalinari, and Dame Firena are summoned to the Throne Room for a short meeting, followed by the official ambassadorial induction ceremony. This is followed by a procession that begins at the campsite, and ends with all the foreign contingents massed amidst a huge press of Ciraline citizens.

At 9 bells, several dignitaries give short speeches, after which Ostri presents the awards to the Company members. The awards are particularly poignant, with the head of Shallum, now two days old, clearly visible on a spike on the nearby courtroom roof. Although the ceremony is actually quite short for each individual, the number of awards keeps the crowds in place until 10 bells, when they are released to reconvene at the tournament grounds.

The tournament continues until half past 7 bells in the evening. Ostri is then called upon to present medals to the winners as follows:

After the awards presentation, the senior members of the contingents relocate to the castle for a great feast and a grand ball. Although the mood is light, the food and music excellent, and the company unparalleled, Sir Tar and Dame Firena are not really in the mood for a party, and retire early to their apartments, to begin their last night in Ciraline. Even Yalinari seems off his game, and joins them in the apartments before midnight. Half an hour later, the only Company members still awake are those on guard duty, and even those, for once, are only half paying attention. Fortunately for them, this is one night that it doesn’t matter.
