Daniki informs them that Morpheus has need of their service. The planning for the invasion of Pomarj has begun, but Pomarj is sending small teams into the Suss Forest near the march route of one of the main invasion columns. Kinnaka and Kentaro are to go to Fenrill, the town where the teams originate, to find out whether they are going in response to information about the forthcoming invasion, or for some other reason.

The Final Report

« A day of discussions | Bottom | | A new town; a new job »

In the morning, Altan and Talisien get up, dress, and head down to the main room. He finds the woman there immediately starts to give his report:

Right. So this Lucky Dice place?

She immediately glares at him and tells him to stow it. He gulps and follows her as she stands and walks out of the common room into a smaller room. Immediately two other men flank the door as Altan and Talisien enter. When the door closes, the woman nods for him to continue.

Altan:

Right. So this Lucky Dice place? Bloody mixed bag it is. Building’s standard fare fer this town, though more’n its fair share o’ magic. Protective spells outside. Illusion t’ make it look high class. Spells to spot magic use. Owner – Marcus – wants t’ be a player, but ain’t makin’ it. Ain’t got the wealth in town t’ support it. Yeah, th’ odd high roller passes through on th’ way t’ Greyhawk, an’ a Bakluni baronet’s damn near moved in, but ain’ta lotta loose coin in town. Still, th’ Hearth Spirit’s happy; lotsa satisfied customers.

Place’s got th’ usual shit. Food, drinks, light entertainment. No weapons or magic allowed. Open mid-afternoon to middle o’ th’ night 5 days a week. Don’t allow no credit, but apparently don’t break yer kneecaps when ye win neither. Locals like it well enough. Never empty, but ain’t never packed.

Staff’s nothin’ t’ write home about. Got a list o’ employees if ye want it, but th’ only interestin’ folks are th’ owner, Marcus; th’ Dice Pit Boss, Thomas; an’ Alec, one o’ th’ dice croupiers. They got a major cheat goin’ on, and don’t take it none too kindly if ye spot it neither. I took ‘em fer a shitload an’ got my ass kicked outa th’ place fer life fer me trouble. Shit. Like I care.

I gotta say, he might not break knees, but that there Marcus is a right prick. Damn well connected though. One brother’s th’ fuckin’ mayor. Other brother’s on th’ fast track t’ be Captain o’ th’ Guard. I ask ye, how can ye ‘spect people t’ think yer running’ a legit business with shit like that goin’ on?

Lessee, what else? Oh yeah, at least one customer, painter name o’ Helene’s involved, too. Gets handed lotsa gold that I’d say she don’t get t’ keep, leastwise not all o’ it. She fuckin’ won 10 gold full one night. Less’n a day later, there’s just 2 full an’ six halves left. Very odd split, wouldn’t ye say? Must be what’s left after a few shady deals. Shit, she sure don’t spend it on fancy livin’! Whatever. We done here?

The woman asks if there is more and Altan replies that there isn’t more. She stands and says, “Yes, we’re done here. It should be no more than a day’s ride to Diamond Lake If you leave now, you’ll get there just after nightfall. There, you’ll be met by a man wiht long, blonde hair.”

Altan looks had at her for a few moments, then shrugs his shoulders, mutters, “Yeah. An’ yer welcome,” and heads up to get his stuff. He’s be on the road as soon as he can get there, but he figures he’ll be through this town again, and if that ball-buster in the cool uniform doesn’t ask for it back, he’s got a voucher that’s still good for more money than he ever thought he’d see at one time. Even if he has to eventually split it with his new “partner”, he’ll still be sitting pretty. Life is looking up.
