25 May, 1211 [25 May 1211]

I write this late at night, after our latest encounter with the local fauna. This time it was Gustuv and Alonso who were on watch when the amulets alerted them to danger. Shortly thereafter, they heard what they initially thought were large birds of prey. When the increasing sound level made it apparent that the unseen “birds” had grown to huge proportions, they chose to awaken Sergeant Miles, and a good thing they did, too, for no sooner had Miles emerged from his tent than they were beset by a … is flock the right word? … of harpies – huge bird-like beings with a woman’s head and torso. The sergeant called a general alarm, which the Company responded to very quickly.

The creatures fought madly. They were tough, capable of taking a very large amount of damage before dropping dead or escaping to someplace only the demons of the hells can fathom. Ultimately, we killed seven creatures before the others gave up the fight. They are filthy creatures with such pestilential claws that Firena spent extra time cleaning everyone’s wounds to avoid the possibility of infection. Fortunately, none were killed, though Sergeant Miles, Orvin, and Alonso all took nasty wounds to the head and face, not to mention the half dozen others who were injured in minor ways. Even as I write this, Firena is finishing up her healing duties. I feel we were a bit lucky. This could have gone much worse.
