24 May, 1211 [24 May 1211]

Today began terribly. Less than an hour after we set off, my warning amulets alerted our point riders, Edmund and Orvin to the presence of enemies, though before they could take any action, they were taken off their horses by a pair of cleverly arranged and well hidden traps made out of saplings and bearing vicious wooden spikes. In the immediate aftermath of the surprise attack, several arrows flew toward them, but apart from wounding Edmund’s horse slightly, did little additional damage.

The commotion drew the attention of several of the forward riders – Master Sergeant Drathon, Cust, and Benito rushed in very quickly, followed closely by Shasivin and Nyra. Apparently their presence was sufficient to cause the attackers to call off their deadly game, for we never did find any sign of them. Nyra examined their trail and estimated that 4 or 5 small men, or possibly elves, had perpetrated the ambush. She offered to follow the trail, but the Captain uncharacteristically declined. Apparently splitting up the Company and following the small group into what Master Sergeant Drathon warned could be a larger trap was not a maneuver to Sir Tar’s liking. I could tell he wanted with every fiber of his being to pursue our attackers, but the immediate needs of the Company came first.

Fortunately, both Edmund and Orvin survived, though both required Firena’s full attention for the better part of the afternoon. It can’t be easy to heal in the back of a bouncing wagon, but our healer persevered, and Edmund and Orvin are presently sleeping soundly. They should be back on full duties in two or three days.

In the meantime, I will try to come up with some way of modifying the warning amulets to trigger on the presence of traps. I must admit however that I gave the idea much thought through the day, and have so far come up empty.
