20 May, 1211 [20 May 1211]

After several days in which nothing out of the ordinary really happened, Benito had a bit of a fright earlier today. Just after lunch, he disappeared into the woods on a “personal errand” to put it delicately. No more than 2 minutes later he came running back toward the camp proper at full speed and without his pants. The cause of his hurry soon made itself known in the form of a huge brown bear that was following him at a speed I would not have thought a bear capable of attaining. The whole incident would have been frightfully funny at the time if not for the very serious danger the lad was in. Fortunately for us all, upon seeing the large number of people in the clearing, the bear realized the error of its ways and almost immediately returned whence it came. Obviously, once the threat had passed, Benito became the instant object of much good-natured ribbing. The jokes at the poor lad’s expense carried on well beyond supper, and I fear are likely to become part of the Company’s growing oral tradition along with Sir Yalinari’s ice-bound exposure and Dreune’s ruined cape.

Speaking of our Bakluni knight, I should report that Sir Yalinari, after 2 days of quiet introspection has apparently returned to his old self. I don’t know what caused him to emerge from his funk any more than I know what caused him to go into it to begin with, but the sight of our Protocol Officer regaling the Company with tales of yore around the evening fire certainly was a welcome one.

For my own part, I am in mourning. I fear I have been less than frugal in rationing my ruby port, and have just finished the last of it. In my defense, it was only a half-sized bottle…
