09 May, 1211 [9 May 1211]

Other than the rain that has barely stopped – though never for long – there has been little to write about these last few days, just the usual boredom of life on the road. Break camp, ride for hours, break for lunch, ride for hours, set camp, eat supper, sleep (with a few hours of guard duty thrown in to break up the monotony). And to top it all off, I’m out of port. Damn.

But I digress. This morning, we had our first sighting of people outside a town – not that the “towns” in these parts are worthy of the name; they are really little more than collections of temporary lodgings thrown up around a few more permanent structures. Anyway, the people rode past in the darkness of pre-dawn while Sergeant Hanar was on guard duty. They didn’t attack, or even seem to notice that we were there, although they surely did notice us. They just rode past without stopping.

Then, this evening, just about the time we were setting camp, we noticed a different group of a dozen people – this time with two wagons – heading eastward. They also passed by without bothering us.

These encounters were not that significant in and of themselves, but I wonder if they mean we are approaching something more meaningful, like a large town or military encampment. For now, I can only report that the sighting of two mounted parties does not have our officers unduly concerned.
