B. Order of the Ram
Knights of the Order of the Ram (OR)
- The OR is a military order that is created in four classes, the numbers of which are relatively fixed:
- 1 Knight Grand Marshal (OR-1(GM)), who is chosen from within the Order
- 4 Knight Marshals (OR-1)
- 16 Knight Commanders (OR-2)
- 50 Knight Companions (OR-3)
- 148 Knights (OR-4)
- Members are almost always promoted from within the Order; that is, a holder of the 4th class will be selected to fill an opening at the 3rd class level. Movement withing the Order is almost exclusively upwards.
- Knights of the Ram are given estates in locations around the County, based on precedence and availability. Postings are organized as follows:
- The OR-1(GM) is posted to the County Capital, Greyhawk City.
- 1 OR-1 is posted to each of the following:
- The Northern Army Headquarters at Castle Greyhawk
- The Southern Army Headquarters at Griffon Rider Outpost
- The Northern Command Post at Blackwall Keep
- The Southern Command Post at Freyl Keep
- 1 OR-2 is posted to each of the 16 most populous boroughs that do not already have an OR-1 posted there.
- 1 OR-3 is posted to each borough. In addition, a second OR-3 is posted to each Army Headquarters.
- OR 4’s are posted as follows:
- 15 to each Army Headquarters
- 10 to each Barony capital (Greyhawk City and Hardby)
- 4 to each Provincial Keep, plus 4 at Fort Harbor
- 2 in every other borough
- In both peacetime and wartime, the knights’ primary responsibility is to carry out the Count’s orders. At times of peace, as servants of the Ministry of Security (aka, The Chancellery), they are the Lord Chancellor’s eyes and ears around the County, and can assume a supervisory capacity in sensitive or high profile criminal investigations at the Lord Chancellor’s request. In all matters of war, the Count assumes complete control of the Order. Knights of the Order are frequently sent abroad to ensure the County’s interests are being looked after. A senior Knight holds a permanent position on the Command Staff in the conflict with Iuz.
- All knights have the authority to muster troops, up to the following limits:
| Rank | Max # of Patrols Commanded | Maximum Troop Strength |
| OR-1(GM) | 64 reinforced Patrols (the entire D. Corps) | 1 DCL + 4 DCP + 64 DG + 640 Sergeant + 6,400 PVT = 7,109 |
| OR-1 | 32 reinforced Patrols (2 D. Columns) | 2 DCP + 32 DG + 320 Sergeant + 3,200 PVT = 3,554 |
| OR-2 | 16 reinforced Patrols (1 D. Column) | 1 DCP + 16 DG + 160 Sergeant + 1,600 PVT = 1,777 |
| OR-3 | 8 reinforced patrols (2 D. Groups) | 2 DL + 8 DG + 80 Sergeant + 800 PVT = 890 |
| OR-4 | 4 reinforced patrols (1 D. Group) | 1 DL + 4 DG + 40 Sergeant + 400 PVT = 445 |
